Our childhood is a relatively short period compared to the hopefully long and healthy human life. Still, it is certainly most exciting, intense and of foremost importance for the course of our whole life as well as for the development of our character.
I advocate the notion that we all come to this world already equipped with our own personality and ownness and merely develop as well as modify those through different experiences and influences in the course of the following years and decades.
It is specifically this personality of the little ones which the children photographer has to capture. Especially through the perception and recognition of the child's character and the respect for their uniqueness one gets a chance to acquaint oneself with the "inner world" of the child, be it more introverted or playful. This way photographs are created, which offer insight into this magical phase of our early life and which shall withstand the passage of time to become valuable memories.
Speaking of personal character development, there is probably nothing that effects us more than our family. Our siblings, our aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas and especially our parents. The deep intimacy shared through the first years of our life, as well as beyond those of course, is what constitutes us in many ways. Regardless of the exact relationships and incidents between the different family members, those are the ones to stay with us our entire life and to determine much more in it than most are aware of...
For these reasons the family is quite a private matter for most. During celebrations however, like birthdays or national or religious holidays, or during family gatherings, a window of opportunity opens for the photographer to capture all these connections and emotions in the family and to create wonderful memories for all to cherish. On the other hand the seemingly mundane daily life can offer as much photographic insight into ourselves and who the people are, who contributed so much to our life.
